Top 15 Albums/Mixtapes of 2015

It has been a pretty great year for hip-hop and R&B fans. Kendrick Lamar delivered yet another classic album. Dr. Dre delivered his final album and it was impressive. Janet Jackson returned with a very cohesive effort. Adele returned from her four-year hiatus to dominate the charts and that's just the beginning. As 2015 comes to an end, it is important to reflect on those projects that made a lasting impression. The following list represents my favorite hip-hop and R&B albums/mixtapes from 2015. Unlike my Top 40 list, I also tried my best to rank these albums based on their merit. I hope you enjoy the list and these projects as much as I did. I'll see you in 2016!

To hear me talk about these projects in detail, check out Episode 18 of my podcast!

Jordan Bratton- "Drugs You Should Try It (Cover)"

Jordan Bratton is a young, upcoming R&B singer from Long Island and he's been making waves recently for the soulful songs he's been releasing. He has now released a cover of Travi$ Scott's "Drugs You Should Try It." This is one of my favorite songs from Days Before Rodeo and Jordan certainly does it justice. Check out his rendition above and you can get his YOUTH EP below.

Moxie Raia Covers Travi$ Scott's "Drugs You Should Try It"

"Drugs You Should Try It" was one of my favorite tracks off of Travi$ Scott's project, Days Before Rodeo. And now Moxie Raia has taken it to another level. She covers the song and her wonderful voice breathes new life into the song. The song sounds like it was meant for her and I'm definitely going to keep m eye out for new music from her.

Travi$ Scott Unveils Album Artwork

Travi$ Scott has unveiled the artwork for his upcoming album, Rodeo, which drops on September 4th. The unique artwork features Travi$ depicted as an action figure/doll and it is very cool. Check out what the photographer, Kevin Amato, had to say about the piece below and pre-order the album here.

The doll was really held under wraps, on lockdown basically. People were flying this doll, it felt human at one point. I didn’t even see it until the shoot. The action figure is almost the size of a Ken doll. He wanted it to be able to fit in the trucks and cars, sit next to Barbie in a Corvette. [The alternate covers] kind of an interesting thing. It also makes multi-personality Travi$. I mean, for me it was good because if you know Travi$ and his energy. It was nice to have one still object ‘cause his energy is so amazing. It’s hard to find someone to shoot a doll and not make it corny or cheap or be able to bring this to life. It’s like a still. It was animated but I didn’t want to make it look like a doll. I think ‘rodeo’ is the world you enter once you get the album. But as it evolves and you see the packaging and the visuals within, it makes sense. Travi$ makes rodeo an emotion. It’s Texas, it’s Houston, it’s a vibe. When the album drops, you will definitely feel a rodeo.

Top 15 Albums/Mixtapes of 2014

It's that time again. 2014 is nearing its end and so I must deliver my list of the top albums and mixtapes from this past year. Last year, I listed ten projects but I could have done a top ten list of R&B albums alone, so this year I decided to increase the list to 15. I must mention that this list does not signify what 15 projects were the absolute best projects of 2014. This list signifies the top 15 projects, in order, that I enjoyed the most in 2014. These are my favorite albums of 2014.

It's hard to be objective when it comes to music because music means something different to everyone that hears it. I can feel something in an album that someone else may not have gotten and that is why I treat this list the way I do. For example, I chose Chance The Rapper's Acid Rap as my favorite project from 2013. 2013 gave us albums from Drake, J. Cole, Kanye, and so much more. But, I'm a Chicago kid and Chance delivered that album from a perspective with which I could completely relate. It was musically brilliant and conceptually amazing. It was not hard to unequivocally choose Acid Rap as my favorite project last year. This year delivered even more solid albums and so now I give you my list.

1. 2014 Forest Hills Drive- J. Cole

2. Cadillactica- Big K.R.I.T.

3. Turn Blue- The Black Keys

4. Days Before Rodeo- Travi$ Scott

5. Oxymoron- ScHoolboy Q

6. Black Messiah- D'Angelo

7. Tough Love- Jessie Ware

8. Cilvia Demo- Isaiah Rashad

9. G  I  R  L- Pharrell Williams

10. Souled Out- Jhené Aiko

11. X- Chris Brown

12. In the Lonely Hour- Sam Smith

13. LP1- FKA twigs

14. The London Sessions- Mary J. Blige

15. Nobody's Smiling- Common

Honorable Mentions: Trigga- Trey Songz, Run The Jewels 2- Run the Jewels, Faces- Mac Miller, Z- SZA

Oh! Shout out to Childish Gambino's Because The Internet. It dropped shortly before I made last year's list and didn't make the cut because I hadn't had the time to truly appreciate it. But it deserved to make the list.

Travi$ Scott- "Mamacita (feat. Rich Homie Quan & Young Thug)" (Music Video)

Travi$ Scott's Days Before Rodeo was one of the best projects to drop this year and he has now liberated the music video for one of the notable tracks, "Mamacita." Both Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug are present in the video to deliver their respective contributions to the track and there's even a cameo from T.I. He also includes some brief visuals for the intro track, "Days Before Rodeo: The Prayer." Check it out above and enjoy.

Travi$ Scott- "Don't Play (feat. Big Sean & The 1975)" (Music Video)

Travi$ Scott revealed the visuals for his track, "Don't Play," which features Big Sean and The 1975. The video is pretty strange; it doesn't really match the theme of the song at all. But Travi$ Scott is constantly trying to push the envelope when it comes to creativity so this is possibly just an idea he had to get out. His latest project, Days Before Rodeo, is available for free and it's pretty dope. Enjoy.
